Hello, Happy Summer! The end of the school year arrived before we knew it was here. One day I found myself feeling proud and watching my only daughter step toward what comes next as she graduated from high school. Seeing the ways she has grown into herself and the ways she no longer needs me in quite the same way she once did. Then there are other moments, where I find myself unexpectedly emotional. It’s a different kind of grief to experience. Looking at photographs, remembering versions of her that only exist in memory now. Feeling the ache that comes with loving someone enough to let them grow. This is the nature of thresholds and transitions. We often imagine change as a clean crossing from one chapter to the next. In reality, most transitions are far messier and far more human. We stand with one foot in what has been and another reaching toward what is becoming. The longer days of June seem to mirror this, as we are resting after a busy spring but also moving ahead with the joy and excitement summer brings. There is a fullness to the season, a sense of movement, possibility and expansion. Summer plans begin to take place, gardens are growing and calendars are filling up as life moves outward. The duality of this season is illuminating. In a few days, we'll reach the Summer Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere - the longest day of the year and a moment that has been honored by cultures around the world for centuries. It is a celebration of fullness, abundance, and vitality. Nature is expressing itself completely and growth is visible everywhere. Yet, there is a paradox hidden within the solstice. The moment we reach the longest day, the light slowly begins its return toward darkness. Nature reminds us that every peak contains a turning point. Every beginning contains a letting go and it asks us to release something that can no longer come with us. This is why I find seasonal living so comforting. It reminds us that change is not a sign that we have failed to hold onto what we love. It is the rhythm of life itself and perhaps you are standing at a threshold of your own. Transitions could be a graduation, a move, a relationship shifting, a career change, children growing older, or simply the feeling that a version of yourself is being asked to evolve. If so, know this - You do not need to choose between gratitude and grief or between excitement and uncertainty. The heart is spacious enough for all of it. The wisdom of seasonal living is not that we control change. It is that we learn to participate in it - with presence, trust in the knowing, that we are taken care of by something larger than us. What I'm leaning into this summer. As I’ve been moving through these seasons of major transition, I noticed the practices that are supporting me are simple and sustainable -
I will leave you with one ritual that has found its way into my days - It is a Saffron and Rose infusion drinkYou can make this with water, or coconut water. You will need a few strands of saffron and a splash of rose water or dried rose petals(find these at any apothecary) and optional a squeeze of lime. Rose is traditionally used to cool and nourish the heart, and saffron is also known for its anxiety-reducing properties. Together, the combination helps uplift the heart and spirit. It is one of my favorite ways to transition from the day into evening and a small reminder that we can create nourishing and sacred rituals for comfort and mindfulness with ease. While preparing for my daughter's next chapter, I've also been preparing for one of my own. My book, Radiant Rituals, will be out this December. It has been years in the making, and I continue to be humbled by the process of bringing it into the world.
